Creative Generation

launch platform for Cambodia’s emerging artists

Three shortlisted candidates for under the canopy 2

Under the canopy 2

For Under the Canopy 2 we reached out to our community of architects, designers and artists to submit a new design to be built at F3 (Friends Futures Factory) at the end of 2023.

FUNCTIONALITY: The canopy must be suitable for the F3 space by using the existing site, it must provide shade and comfort to visitors, and be adequate for public events and large crowds.

BEAUTY: Designers must consider the environment in which the canopy is situated that includes historical buildings and natural features like the large tree in the courtyard. We don’t have specific requirements regarding the beauty, but ask that the designers use their imagination and creativity to propose a design that is new and exciting.

SUSTAINABILITY: The canopy is a temporary structure and in line with our principals it must be built from environmentally sustainable materials. Materials must be sourced from natural, organic materials OR recovered from waste AND can be either safely disposed of OR reused after the project.

ABOUT

Creative Generation is a platform to launch Cambodia’s new artistic talents by celebrating, mentoring and inspiring young creatives to cultivate a strong artistic vision and professional skills. It formalizes and deepens the work of Java Creative Café which runs a family of cafes and community art spaces and has been modelling cultural enterprise in Cambodia for nearly two decades.

Since the year 2000, Artistic Director Dana Langlois has been mentoring and providing opportunities to Cambodia’s emerging artistic voices, many of whom have gone on to establish international careers as artists and curators. In 2017, Langlois established the Creative Generation award program in the same spirit, while expanding further into the creative fields, building new connections and supporting the growing number of art and design graduates and young artists.
