Under the Canopy 2 – Meet the Designers

Creative Generation has partnered again with Friends-International for the second ‘Under the Canopy’ project at F3 (Friends Futures Factory). We work with young Cambodian creatives to propose a sustainable design for a temporary canopy in the courtyard of F3 with its historically-rich buildings and socially-driven community space. It provides a space for regular events that support the F3 social businesses and youth training. To which we contribute a program of thought-provoking and creative events featuring local experts and artists.

DESIGN & MENTORSHIP

For Under the Canopy 2 we reached out to our community of architects, designers and artists to submit a new design. From several amazing design proposals, the following team was selected for the beauty of their concept, respect for the space and clever use of materials.

Sou Oudom & Try Sokha Raksmey

“In our design approach, we want to create a space where people feel they are being protected yet lifted… a feeling of ease, calm and resonance with nature outside, the sky, and the surrounding landscape as well as the heritage building.” – Sou Oudom & Try Sokha Raksmey

Sou Oudom, 24yrs old, and Try Sokha Raksmey, 22yrs old, are both junior architects and graduates of the Royal University of Fine Arts. They have teamed up to make a design that is equally poetic and functional for the space. To make sure their design is sustainable, Oudom and Raksmey have chosen to recycle material into long strips of fabric for the canopy. After the project is complete all materials will be repurposed once again into tote bags.

For the new edition we welcome experts Charles Gallavardin and Dominique Desmet from Kanopea Architecture Studio (France) and T3 Architects (Vietnam + Cambodia), to the mentorship team including producers and artistic directors from Mith Samlanh, F3 and Creative Generation.

All together with a group of volunteers we will build the canopy at the end of the year and open it to the public on November 18, 2023.

Guided by our mentorship team, the young designers will have completed several tasks useful for developing their professional skills:

  • Submit a design concept and master plan
  • Respond to client requirements
  • Work with suppliers and vendors
  • Test and manage material construction
  • Engage communities to participate in various ways
  • Create and follow a budget
  • Speak with the press
  • Give a designer talk

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING

Under the Canopy 2 will be installed for the dry season from the Water Festival (November 2023) to Khmer New Year (April 2024). During that time Creative Generation will present a series of public events and artistic interventions “under the canopy” including film screenings, live music, projections, and expert presentations.
