SUMMARY:Screening of No Other Land and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Due to overwhelming demand\, Cambodia Palestine Solidarity community presents a re-screening of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land\, directed by Basel Adra\, Hamdan Ballal\, Yuval Abraham\, and Rachel Szor. The event will begin with a brief presentation providing context for the documentary and end with a Q&A session with members of the Cambodia Palestine Solidarity group. \n\n\n\nAbout the Film:Basel Adra\, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta\, as soldiers destroy the homes of families – the largest single act of forced transfer ever carried out in the occupied West Bank. He crosses paths with Yuval\, an Israeli journalist who joins his struggle\, and for over half a decade they fight against the expulsion while growing closer. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel\, living under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval\, unrestricted and free. This film\, by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four young activists\, was co-created during the darkest\, most terrifying times in the region\, as an act of creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice.

SUMMARY:Concert Under the Canopy: MeDha x Smomid
DESCRIPTION:Concert Under the Canopy: MeDha x Smomid \n\n\n\n7pm – 9pm Saturday\, 20 January 2024 \n\n\n\nAt Friends Futures Factory \n\n\n\nEntry fee by donation – pay what you feel \n\n\n\nFor Under the Canopy\, we have invited artists to activate the space in creative ways. Our first event is a concert that features MeDha\, Cambodia’s first female drum group\, and Nick Demopoulos\, an experimental electronic musician\, who will collaborate for a one-of-a-kind live music event. \n\n\n\nThis concert will bring together MeDha’s empowering drum music\, performed on traditional instruments\, combined with an improvised performance and multi-sensory experience created by Nick Demopoulos as Smomid. \n\n\n\nExpect a fusion of rhythms\, melodies\, cultures\, and technologies\, as the powerful drumbeats meet electronic music and projections\, against the backdrop of the visually compelling canopy. Join us for a unique experience that celebrates cross-cultural collaboration! \n\n\n\nAbout the artists: \n\n\n\nMeDha is the first female drum group in Cambodia\, established in 2017. We use traditional Khmer instruments to create new music\, along with a story that reflects the realities of Cambodian society. Through our music we demand change and express the potential and ability of women in society and the arts. We want to encourage other women to stand up and do what they love and be able to achieve their dreams. MeDha is sponsored and created by Cambodia Living Arts (CLA). We have performed and participated in many art festivals in Cambodia. \n\n\n\nSmomid is a project by Nick Demopoulos\, who is a performer\, musician and instrument builder. As Smomid\, he uses instruments and software he created to enable digitally interactive performance and multi-sensory experiences. Smomid instruments create sound\, video projections and emit light. As a guitarist he worked with NEA jazz master Chico Hamilton\, with whom he recorded on four albums. He worked as a cultural diplomat for the U.S. State Department\, performing in Bahrain\, Yemen\, Oman\, U.A.E and Kuwait. Smomid has performed at Lincoln Center\, and featured on Discovery Channel\, Guitar World\, Create Digital Music and BOMB magazine. \n\n\n\n*** \n\n\n\nUnder the Canopy is a Creative Generation project at F3 (Friends Futures Factory). It is an architectural intervention that emphasizes principles of sustainability and contemporary design-thinking. It is made possible thanks to the support of our partner organization Friends-International. \n\n\n\nSpecial thanks for the generous support provided by Debra Fram + Eric Schwartz and the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia.

Shanghai’s work explores themes of sexuality\, self-harm\, violence and drug use through carefully constructed scenes. Influenced by Italian horror cinema\, he skillfully uses color to transform a moment of brutality into one of beauty. As viewers we are equally attracted and repulsed by what we see. \nShanghai is a multi-disciplinary artist and is interested in producing work that pushes boundaries and is sometimes confrontational. He feels that it is unnatural if art doesn’t explore difficult topics that for him are a part of his everyday reality. \nFor this event Shanghai has produced a new sound piece and live performance that will follow the film screening. The audience is invited to stay for a q&a with the artist at the end of the program. \n_____ \nSHANGHAI CHANG (b. 1996\, Phnom Penh Cambodia) has a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design and Photography. He is a co-founder of the HOMELESS Artist Collective. His art practice includes Conceptual Fashion\, Visual art\, Installation\, Photography\, Film and Video Art.

SUMMARY:Phlauv (The Way) by Khuon Chay
DESCRIPTION:Dance performance produced by Khuon Chay\nArtist in residence\nCreative Generation Performance Series\n7pm 6+7 January 2023\nEntrance by donation\nJava Creative Cafe Toul Tom Poung \nPhlauv\, meaning “road” or “path” in Khmer\, is a new project that blends Khmer classical and contemporary dance. The story describes the life of the choreographer KHUON CHAY. Specifically\, KHUON focuses on some of the memories in his life after he decided to become a classical dancer in 2019 and fulfill his childhood dream. The story has seven scenes featuring four dancers. Sections of this project reflect on KHUON’s personal journey as a performer\, teacher\, and rising artist. Although the story is mostly about KHUON’s life\, KHUON also enhances each scene to broaden the performance’s educational value for the audience while also incorporating his own Buddhist values. \nKhuon Chay\, 25\, from Kampot\, Cambodia\, is a professional dancer and instructor at Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA Dance Company\, the first gay dance company in Cambodia. He is also an actor at Sereiyos Productions. Khuon has performed internationally in Berlin at the CTM Festival\, in Kassel at the Documenta Festival\, as well as locally in Cambodia. His project titled Phlauv aims to depict his life and identity as an emerging artist. In his free time\, Khuon listens to ballads\, studies Cambodian history\, and walks along Phnom Penh’s riverside. Khuon wants to study English to expand his opportunities as an artist from Cambodia and communicate his ideas and values to a broader audience. He is especially interested in creating performance art that interrogates environmental issues\, experiences with movement and migration\, challenges facing LGBTQ people\, and through this\, share Cambodian classical dance with the world. \nPhlauv (The Way) is part of the Creative Generation Performance series\, produced by Dana Langlois. It is made possible thanks to the generous support of Debra Fram + Eric Schwartz. \nThe artist wishes to give special thanks to Prumsodun OK for his mentorship.

DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between Jean-Baptiste PHOU & SAO SreymaoCurated by Dana LANGLOIS \n\n\n\n27 November 2022● 6pm: Film screening● 6:30pm: Artist talk with SAO Sreymao and Jean-Baptiste PHOU● 7:30pm: Closing performance by SAO Sreymao and Jean-Baptiste PHOUJava Creative Cafe Toul Tom Poung53 Street 468\, Phnom Penh \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy a Thread is an exhibition of film\, photography\, installation and performance by artists Jean-Baptiste PHOU & SAO Sreymao that empathetically explores communication and grief. \n\n\n\nThe whole exhibition revolves around the film\, My Mother’s Tongue which tells the story of a mother and son who don’t speak the same language\, until something unlocks when she suddenly falls very ill. The emotional journey unfolds through a series of vignettes that draw the viewer deeper into the inner world of a son seeking understanding and to be understood. The work is very personal and at the same time part of the universal human experience. \n\n\n\nThe images from the film combining photography and digital drawing will be printed and form the central work of the exhibition. The audience will be invited to participate in communal grieving through a sculpture created by SAO Sreymao. They will be able to write their own messages and hang them to the installation. On the final day of the exhibition\, viewers may join the artists while they perform a ritual cleansing to bring relief and shared comfort. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is especially poignant at a time when the world is entering a post-covid phase in which many of us are left with our loss and memories. The body of work is emotionally intelligent\, poetic and has been created with great sensitivity. Through a series of images and quiet actions\, it creates space for connection and understanding\, leaving us with the feeling that we are not alone. \n\n\n\nThe program will start with an opening event\, run for one month with daily film screenings and conclude with a live performance. Additionally\, Jean-Baptiste PHOU has created a participatory digital installation that allows people from around the world to share their own stories. It can be accessed at echoesfromthestars.com. \n\n\n\n_____ \n\n\n\nBy a Thread is presented as part of the Creative Generation Performance series and Photo Phnom Penh\, with the support of Debra Fram + Eric Schwartz and l’Institut Français du Cambodge.
